He has published more than 400 research papers and has held major leadership roles including Director of the Melbourne Materials Institute and founding Director of the Defence Science Institute. His current research focuses on diamond and carbon-based materials for stable neural interfaces, brain-computer interfaces, and next-generation bioelectronic devices.

Professor Liu works in integrative life systems and organoid biochips. He has led multiple national and provincial research projects and published more than 100 papers in journals including PNAS, PRL, Lab Chip, and Nat. Commun. His current work bridges brain organoid intelligence and swarm robot intelligence through AI, supporting applications in psychiatric disease characterization, drug screening, and cognitive mechanism analysis.
